Lexus LC
The Lexus LC is a grand tourer manufactured by the Japanese automaker Lexus, a luxury division of Toyota. Based on the 2012 LF-LC Concept, it was revealed at the 2016 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. It replaced the SC, which was produced from 1991 to 2010. It is the first Lexus model to utilize the GA-L platform, which, along with other components, is shared with the full-size LS 500 sedan.
Exterior
The LC retained the overall design of the concept model. It has a variant of Lexus' corporate "spindle" grille with a gradient pattern; a tightly compressed mesh at the top transitions to a wider diamond at the bottom. However, unlike other vehicles in the lineup, the top of the spindle grille does not have a chrome surround The compact LED triple-projector headlight is in the small overhang between the bumper and wheels.
The front and rear overhangs are short—the front is 920 mm (36 in), and the back is 970 mm (38 in). The lines from the front fender build up the A-pillar to form the boundaries of the blacked-out roof—Lexus cites “the traditional Japanese sword” as the inspiration for the sharp edges of the C-pillar molding
Interior
The interior of the LC is a blend of driving pleasure and comfort. The cockpit has a driving position that fosters a sense of unity between the driver and the car, and a layout based on thorough running-in, such as pedal placement, steering tilt, and seat hold-ability. It has a shift-by-wire system and next-generation multimedia corresponding to intuitive control of the operation system. The steering wheel changes the cross-sectional shape precisely according to the position to be gripped, and it holds comfortably. A magnesium material was used for the paddle shift, and operability and textures were combined to produce increased driving pleasure. The passenger seat aimed to create an open space that makes it visually wide in front of the vehicle while encircling the passenger. It has leather and Alcantara, and the texture feel deepens with each touch. This is achieved with delicate, high-quality manufacturing by Lexus' unique sensibility and craftsmanship. The driver display has a movable multi-information display adopted by IS and RC's "F SPORT" grade for all vehicles. Additionally, there are high quality luxury features such as an audio system developed in consideration with the vehicle interior design.
Chassis
The LC is the first vehicle to use Lexus' front-engine, rear-wheel drive platform, dubbed "Global Architecture – Luxury" (GA-L). It consists of various materials, including high-strength steel, aluminum, and carbon fiber. The GA-L platform will underpin future rear-wheel drive models, including the Lexus LS 500, which was introduced in January 2017. The platform is designed to provide lower overall mass, improved front/rear weight distribution, and a low center of gravity. Run-flat tires are also used to avoid the need for a spare, and the vehicle battery has been relocated to the trunk to improve weight distribution.
The suspension is a double-joint multi-link suspension with a forged aluminum upper arm is secured at two points, which ensures all movements are mirrored from the lower arm. The double-joint design reduces the necessary height of the suspension system, as placement is lower than a traditional single-joint setup.
Powertrain
LC 500
The 2UR-GSE 5.0-liter V8 engine powering the Lexus LC 500 is an updated version of the engine found in the RC F & GS F. It features D-4S direct fuel injection, Atkinson cycle operation, and VVT-i. The unit produces 471 hp (478 PS; 351 kW) at 7,100 rpm, 398 lb⋅ft (540 N⋅m) of torque at 4,800 rpm. Attached to the 2UR-GSE engine is a Direct Shift 10-speed automatic transmission, marking the first time a 10-speed transmission has been used in a luxury vehicle.
LC 500h
The LC 500h employs a new powertrain, known as the Lexus Multi Stage Hybrid system. It consists of a 3.5-litre, 295 hp (299 PS; 220 kW), 257 lb⋅ft (348 N⋅m) 8GR-FXS V6, in addition to two electric motors whose total output is 177 hp (179 PS; 132 kW), 221 lb⋅ft (300 N⋅m). Combined power output over the entire system is 472 hp (479 PS; 352 kW).
The engine and motors are coupled to a unique transmission, which consists of a four-speed automatic transmission embedded inside a continuously variable transmission. This “dual” transmission provides stepped access to the torque generated by the electric motor, and functions similarly to a 10-speed automatic transmission.
This powertrain is also used by the Lexus LS 500h.
